KATHMANDU: British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja reached the summit of Nanga Parbat on July 3, 2025, becoming the first person to successfully climb 50 peaks above 8,000 meters. This achievement includes 22 ascents completed without the use of supplementary oxygen.
During the climb, Nims carried a flag representing his service with the Gurkhas and the UK Special Forces, symbolizing the longstanding connection between Nepal and the United Kingdom.
Nanga Parbat, often referred to as the “Killer Mountain,” presented significant challenges this season. Nims described the climb as his most dangerous expedition yet, citing summit winds exceeding 65 km/h, unstable icy terrain, and frequent rockfalls.
Reflecting on the milestone, Nims expressed gratitude and emphasized his aim to inspire others to pursue their goals.
The season also saw the loss of fellow climber Klara Kolouchova, the first Czech woman to summit Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga, who died on Nanga Parbat. Nims remembered her both for her achievements and her friendship.
Nims has previously set records in high-altitude mountaineering, including completing all 14 of the world’s highest peaks in just over six months in 2019. His documentary, 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, brought wider attention to Sherpa climbers and contributed to increased tourism in Nepal.
In 2021, Nims led the first winter ascent of K2 by an all-Nepali team without supplemental oxygen. Beyond climbing, he established the Nimsdai Foundation in 2022 to support environmental cleanup, education, disaster relief, and porter welfare.
Currently, Nims is undertaking the Hat-Trick Challenge, aiming to climb the 14 highest peaks and the 7 summits for a third time, with all proceeds supporting his foundation.
In 2024, he set a record as the fastest person to summit all 14 peaks without supplemental oxygen, completing the feat in just over two years.
