About Nepal News

Nepal News is Nepal’s first online news portal, registered on July 16, 1998, and operational through its own correspondents since 1999. As an independent English-language news portal of Nepal News Pvt. Ltd, it is owned and managed by a team of professional journalists. Nepal News has always adhered to rigorous editorial guidelines to ensure accuracy, impartiality, and fairness, while holding journalists accountable in their pursuit of truth. It is a non-partisan, free, and fair media outlet committed to quality journalism, investigative reporting, research-based articles, and long-form magazine storytelling.

In its early years, Nepal News became a critical information hub and a window to the wider world, especially during times when few other online portals existed in Nepal. The portal witnessed the growth of the internet in the country and played a pivotal role in establishing the relevance of digital news during the initial phase of Nepal’s online expansion. It provides a wide range of content, including magazine-style stories, breaking news, in-depth coverage of current affairs, commentary, and analysis, all in both Nepali and English, creating news with an edge for its audience.

Nepal News was originally established by Mercantile Communications Pvt. Ltd. under the domain www.nepalnews.com, with the dual objective of delivering timely, impartial news and building a global web community for people interested in Nepal. In its early operations, the portal gathered content through professional correspondents reporting from the field and by hosting a variety of Nepali and English publications with paid copyright agreements. This model allowed Nepal News to offer quality news while establishing itself as a trusted source of information.

The portal’s dedication to journalism was recognized internationally. The BBC acknowledged Nepal News as a leading site for news about Nepal and granted permission to host its daily Nepali broadcast segment. Nepal News was also recognized by CNN and other international news organizations, serving as a reference point for global audiences for more than a decade. Throughout this time, NepalNews.com provided its services free-of-charge, with revenue derived from advertisers and e-commerce partnerships.

In January 2015, Mercantile Communications suspended Nepal News’ own reporting operations due to financial losses, although archived content and streaming of TV, FM, and weekly publications remained accessible. In 2018, Nepal News was relaunched in Nepali under new management, followed by the relaunch of the English version in January 2021, overseen by a professional team of advisors, editors, and journalists. Despite operational challenges and economic slowdowns, Nepal News continued to provide authentic, verified, and unbiased news coverage, both from Nepal and around the world.

At the end of 2024, journalist & entrepreneur Pramod Raj Sedhain acquired Nepal News, aiming to revitalize the portal with a renewed focus on innovation, long-read magazine storytelling, and investigative journalism. Under his leadership, Nepal News is enhancing its digital infrastructure, relaunching archived content, and building a dedicated team of skilled journalists, editors, and technical staff. The portal remains committed to delivering trustworthy, timely, and insightful news while engaging with its readers through their comments, views, and ideas, continuing its legacy as a pioneering digital news platform in Nepal.
