KATHMANDU: Private school operators across Nepal are set to stage nationwide demonstrations on Monday in protest against the School Education Bill.

The protesting schools have announced programs to encircle the federal parliament in Kathmandu and provincial assemblies across the country.

According to Private and Boarding Schools’ Organization, Nepal (PABSON) central advisor D.K. Dhungana, school operators will gather at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu at 11 a.m. before marching toward the House of Representatives.

At the same time, demonstrations will also be held in front of provincial assembly buildings in all seven provinces.

The operators are entering the second phase of their agitation, demanding amendments to several provisions of the School Education Bill recently endorsed by the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee of the House of Representatives.

Organizations including ABSON, N-PABSON, HISSAN, and OPEN are participating in the protests. Private schools have expressed strong opposition to provisions that require them to operate as non-profit institutions and to provide full scholarships, arguing that these measures threaten their sustainability.
