KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Centre) has convened a joint meeting of opposition parties in the wake of Monday’s Gen Z protests, which left 19 people dead.
Party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” has called the meeting for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Maoist parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar.
Leaders said discussions will focus on the political crisis, the youth-led uprising, and a coordinated opposition strategy.
On Monday evening, the Maoist Centre’s office-bearers meeting declared those killed in the protests as martyrs and demanded Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation.
The party also announced plans for nationwide anti-government demonstrations across all municipalities. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), however, has opted out of the joint meeting.
Spokesperson Manish Jha said the party would not take part, emphasizing internal reflection over ritual gatherings.
“In this grave and extraordinary situation, our priority is not ritual meetings but meaningful internal deliberations within the party,” he stated.
The deaths of 19 protesters, widespread injuries, and growing public anger have intensified pressure on the government.
At the same time, divisions among opposition forces over how to respond have become more apparent.
