KP Oli, Four Others Face Passport Suspension and Travel Ban
The Cabinet has decided to suspend the passports of former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi, then-Chief of the National Investigation Department Hutaraj Thapa, and former Kathmandu CDO Chhabi Raj Rijal.
The decision was taken during the Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on September 28. The meeting also imposed a restriction preventing them from leaving the Kathmandu Valley.
Ajay Bhadra Khanal Appointed as Chief Advisor to PM Sushila Karki
Prime Minister Sushila Karki has appointed Ajay Bhadra Khanal as her chief advisor. Similarly, Govinda Narayan Timsina has been appointed as public relations advisor. According to Minister for Communication, Information and Technology Jagadish Kharel, Sunday’s Cabinet meeting approved the appointments of the two advisors.
Govt Intensifies Probe into Undisclosed Cash Found During Gen Z Movement
The Ministry of Finance has said investigations have been intensified in places where undisclosed cash was found. During the Gen Z protests, media outlets and social media users reported incidents of cash being burned or recovered from the homes of various leaders and other locations. The ministry stated that it has taken serious note of the issue and urged citizens to use electronic transactions as much as possible. It also clarified that, by law, individuals are allowed to keep any amount of money if its source is legitimate and income has been declared.
Dharan Mayor Harka Rai Applies to Register Party
Harka Raj Rai, mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, has applied to the Election Commission to register a new political party named Labor Culture Party. Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai confirmed to Nepal News that the application has been received. “The application has come under the name Shram Sanskriti Party. We are currently reviewing whether all required documents and procedures for party registration have been completed,” Bhattarai said.
Cabinet Transfers Two Additional Inspector Generals of Police
The Cabinet has transferred two Additional Inspector Generals (AIGs) of Nepal Police, Rajan Adhikari and Siddhi Bikram Shah. The Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on September 28 decided to assign Adhikari to the Human Resources Department and Shah to the Nepal Police Training Academy.
UML Leader Binda Pandey: Senior Party Leaders Must Make Way
CPN (UML) leader Binda Pandey, reflecting on the Gen Z uprising, said that the first step should be for the top leaders of major parties to make way. She wrote on social media that to understand the issues raised and the sentiments expressed by Gen Z; it would be enough if everyone patiently listened to the voices of the youths in their own families, relatives, and neighborhoods. Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal held a courtesy meeting with Japan’s Ambassador to Nepal, MAEDA Toru. Over 6,500 Rounds Fired During Gen Z Protest: Police Internal Report
An internal police report has revealed that more than 6,500 rounds were fired during the Gen Z protest. According to the report, approximately 4,000 live rounds and over 2,500 rubber bullets were used. The Police Headquarters formed a committee to document the weapons looted and the ammunition expended. The committee, led by DIG Deepak Regmi from the Investigation Planning and Development Directorate, submitted its findings to IGP Chandra Kuber Khapung.
NC to Move Ahead Through Regular Convention: Spokesperson Mahat
Nepali Congress spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has said that the party will move forward through a regular general convention. Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Sunday, Mahat said that the demand to convene a special general convention was not appropriate and reiterated that the party would advance through the regular general convention.
He informed that the party’s Central Working Committee meeting scheduled for October 12 will take necessary decisions on the general convention as well as recent political developments.
Rain Forecast During Dashain; Travelers Advised to Monitor Weather
Rain is expected during this year’s Dashain festival, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), which has issued a special Dashain weather bulletin. The bulletin indicates that rainfall may occur in many areas from Ashtami and Nawami to Dashami. Although continuous heavy rain is unlikely, intermittent showers are possible. The department has advised travelers to check daily forecasts and road conditions during the festival, as weather can vary across regions.
Stock Market to Remain Closed for a Week Due to Dashain Holidays
The share market will remain closed for a week due to the Dashain holidays. The market will stay shut until Saturday and will reopen only on the following Sunday after Dashain. In the last trading session before Dashain, the market rose by 11.51 points, bringing the market index to 2,663.51 points. The total turnover today amounted to Rs 2.93 billion. Among the market sectors, ten indices rose while three declined. The largest drop of 1.28 percent occurred in the Trading group.
Nepal’s Public Debt Reaches Rs 2.743 Trillion
By September 16, 2025, Nepal’s outstanding public debt had reached Rs 2.743 trillion. This equals 44.92% of the country’s GDP. By the end of July 16, 2025, the figure was Rs 2.674 trillion. Of the total outstanding debt, domestic debt stood at Rs 1.282 trillion (20.99% of GDP), while external debt stood at Rs 1.461 trillion (23.93% of GDP), according to the Public Debt Management Office.
Rs 120 Billion in Bank Loans Affected by Gen Z Unrest
Around Rs 120 billion worth of loans from banks and financial institutions were affected by the protests and vandalism on September 8–9. Data jointly compiled by Nepal Rastra Bank and umbrella organizations of banks and financial institutions show that loans equivalent to this amount were impacted. Sources said that more than 95% of the affected loans belonged to commercial banks.
Budget Cuts Hit Highway Maintenance
The government is cutting the budget even for highway maintenance. It has become difficult to clear landslides. Experts say the problem has arisen because the Ministry of Finance and the National Planning Commission have allocated funds to petty projects to please lawmakers instead of prioritizing national highways. According to Schedules 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the Constitution, highways fall under the sole responsibility of the federal government.
Insurance Claims from Gen Z Protests Reach Rs 23.39 Billion
The insurance claims for damages caused by the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9, have reached Rs 23.39 billion. According to the Nepal Insurance Authority, claims are still being reported. So far, 594 claims have been filed under property insurance, 2,209 under motor insurance, 144 under engineering and contract risk insurance, 11 under transport insurance, and 30 under other categories.

The shooting of the film ‘Gobar Ganesh,’ directed by Marichman Shrestha, popularly known as ‘Balchhi Dhurbe’, has been completed. Sahridayata International Israel to Organize Charity Concert

More Than 39 Dead in Crush At Political Rally in India
At least 39 people have died, including children, in a crush at a political rally in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, state officials say. Tens of thousands of people had gathered on Saturday at a campaign event for actor-turned-politician Vijay, in the southern Karur district. It was delayed by several hours, local media reported. Images broadcast on television showed people fainting in the packed crowds. Politician Senthil Balaji spoke to reporters outside a local hospital to confirm the deaths, and added that more than 50 other people had been injured.
Russia Has No Intention of Attacking EU or Nato States, Foreign Minister Says
Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov says his country has no intention of attacking EU or Nato member states but warned of a “decisive response” to any “aggression” directed towards Moscow. In a wide-ranging speech delivered at the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Lavrov said threats against Russia by Western countries were becoming “increasingly common”. Iran Warned Not to Escalate Tensions as UN Sanctions Reimposed
The UK, France and Germany have called on Iran not to escalate tensions and to pursue negotiations after UN sanctions were reinstated on Saturday. The three countries said they had “no choice” but to bring back the sweeping measures against Tehran “as a last resort” over its “continued nuclear escalation” and lack of cooperation. “We urge Iran to refrain from any escalatory action,” they said in a joint statement, adding: “The reimposition of UN sanctions is not the end of diplomacy.”
