KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued a show-cause order and sought written responses from the high-level inquiry commission formed to investigate the September 8-9 Gen Z protests, during which at least 74 people were killed.

The commission, appointed by the government to probe the alleged atrocities, is headed by former Special Court Chairman Gauri Bahadur Karki, with Bigyan Raj Sharma and Biseshwar Prasad Bhandari as members.

The writ petition, filed by Bipin Dhakal, alleges that the commission was biased and not neutral.

The bench, led by Acting Chief Justice Hari Phuyal, asked the commission to clarify whether prior statements or opinions by its members could affect impartiality, noting the principle of natural justice.

The petition also lists the Prime Minister’s Office as a respondent.

The court observed that no interim order is required at this stage, as the matter warrants a full hearing.
