KATHMANDU: Coliform bacteria, a marker of fecal contamination, have been detected in drinking water sources in wards 2 and 6 of Kumakh Rural Municipality, Salyan, triggering public health concerns.

Tests conducted under the local water, sanitation, and hygiene project found contamination in 11 out of 83 sampled sources, affecting water supply for over 300 households.

Local officials warned of increased risks of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and cholera and said awareness drives and purification measures will be rolled out.

Open defecation near forests and streams is suspected to be the cause.
