KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Urban Development has begun providing a monthly pension/relief of Rs 21,800 to the families of 42 Gen Z martyrs. The pension/relief is being distributed to the families of those who lost their lives during the protest held on September 8 and 9, 2025.
At least 76 people were killed during the protest. A decision was later made to declare all of them martyrs, except those who had escaped from jail at the time. Among those declared martyrs were three police personnel. The current pension, however, has been released for 42 individuals, excluding the police.
According to the Ministry of Urban Development, funds required to provide the pension for a period of 10 years have been released from the Reconstruction Fund. At the rate of Rs 21,800 per month for 13 months a year, the total cost for 10 years amounts to Rs 119 million.
The Ministry said discussions were held with the Ministry of Finance regarding the release of the funds. However, the amount was ultimately released from the Reconstruction Fund without formal approval from the Finance Ministry. Officials at the Ministry of Finance confirmed that no file related to the pension or relief had been approved by the ministry.
