KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle has made it clear that Nepal will not pursue demonetization, putting to rest growing speculation over the government’s monetary policy direction.
In a brief response posted on social media, Minister Wagle said the government has no plans to introduce a policy similar to 2016 Indian demonetization. “We will not do that,” he stated, offering a direct rebuttal to circulating rumors.
The clarification comes amid increasing public conjecture about possible currency reforms. Wagle, who was appointed finance minister under the leadership of Balendra Shah, has already made significant early moves in office, including a decision to scrap 15 laws, among them provisions related to the Revenue Investigation Department.
His remarks signal the government’s intent to avoid disruptive monetary interventions while focusing on broader structural reforms.
