KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued a short-term interim order not to implement the decision to remove the Free Students’ Union (FSU) President of the central campus from the ex-officio membership of the Tribhuvan University (TU) Senate.
On Friday, a bench of Justice Abdul Aziz Musalman issued the short-term interim order not to implement the decision to remove the FSU President from the university senate for the time being. In the Tribhuvan University Senate, there was a provision for the President of the central campus to attend as an ex-officio member of the senate.
However, the provision making the FSU President an ex-officio member was removed in an ordinance issued by the government. FSU President and University Senate member Deepak Raj Joshi had moved the Supreme Court against this move. The court has summoned both parties for a discussion on whether to continue the interim order or not.
The petitioner, Joshi, has argued that the provision to remove FSU representation from the university senate through an ordinance is against the constitution, democratic values, and the principle of university autonomy. The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and Tribhuvan University, among others, have been named as defendants in the writ.
