KATHMANDU: Party cadres from Kalaiya Sub-Metropolitan City of Bara staged a sit-in protest at the central office of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) today, demanding transparency and clarification over a dispute related to the party’s municipal convention results.
The agitating cadres said Umashankar Rauniyar had been elected municipal president after securing 124 votes during the Kalaiya convention. However, controversy emerged after the party issued a notice calling for fresh elections, despite the elected committee already taking its oath of office.
Protesters alleged that the Madhesh Province Committee decided to annul the result on the grounds that the “50 plus 1” majority threshold had not been met, a move they claim violates the party’s constitution and democratic norms.
They further objected to the fact that the re-election notice was circulated via social media without official documentation or signature. Calling the decision arbitrary, the cadres demanded a clear explanation from the party leadership and insisted on adherence to internal rules and transparent decision-making in the ongoing convention process.
