Insurance claims from Gen Z protests reach Rs 23.39 billion

KATHMANDU: Insurance claims worth Rs 23.39 billion have been filed for damages caused to physical infrastructure during the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9.

According to the Nepal Insurance Authority, applications are still being received. So far, 594 property insurance, 2,209 motor insurance, 144 engineering and contract risk insurance, 11 transport insurance, and 30 other types of claims have been registered.

The highest number of claims has come from Bagmati Province, with 1,608 applications, followed by Koshi with 377, Madhesh with 323, Gandaki with 219, Lumbini with 254, Karnali with 25, and Sudurpaschim with 182.

In total, 2,988 claims have been submitted nationwide. Officials estimate that the number will rise further as more damage assessments are completed.

Company-wise, Siddhartha Premier Insurance has received claims worth Rs 5.45 billion, The Oriental Insurance Rs 5.23 billion, IGI Prudential Insurance Rs 2.79 billion, Shikhar Insurance Rs 2.39 billion, and Sagarmatha Lumbini Insurance Rs 1.57 billion.

Overall, the claims have been filed across 14 non-life insurance companies and four micro-insurance firms, the Authority confirmed.
