Nearly Rs 2 billion in insurance claims paid for damages during Gen Z protests

KATHMANDU: Around Rs 2 billion has already been paid out in insurance claims for damages caused by vandalism, arson, looting, and property destruction during the Gen Z movement across Nepal.

According to the Nepal Insurance Authority, a total of 3,163 claims have been registered so far, amounting to Rs 25.14 billion in total claims.

Of this, Rs 1.95 billion has been paid out. Fourteen non-life insurance companies and four micro-insurance companies still have pending claims worth Rs 23.19 billion, the Authority said.

The largest share of payments has been made under property insurance, while motor insurance has the highest number of claims filed.

Under property insurance, 673 claims worth Rs 19.71 billion were filed, of which Rs 1.55 billion has been paid.

Motor insurance accounted for 2,256 claims worth Rs 3.44 billion, and Rs 362.5 million—including advance payments—has been paid out so far.

Similarly, 182 claims were registered under engineering and contract risk insurance, with Rs 381 million already paid against total claims of Rs 333.18 million.

Under other insurance categories, 40 claims worth Rs 388.6 million were filed, and Rs 2.2 million—including advance payments—has been settled.

In the transport insurance category, 12 claims totaling Rs 1.63 billion were registered, but none have been paid yet.
