KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has exported electricity worth around Rs 15 billion since mid-July, the start of the current fiscal year.
On average, 1,000 megawatts of surplus electricity are exported daily after meeting domestic demand.
Power is sold to the Indian states of Haryana and Bihar through the Indian Energy Exchange’s Day-ahead and real-time markets, as well as under bilateral medium-term agreements.
Additionally, 40 megawatts are exported daily to Bangladesh via India’s transmission infrastructure.
Electricity trade with India is conducted in Indian rupees, while exports to Bangladesh generate revenue in US dollars, earning the country foreign currency.
The authority has received approval to export a total of 1,165 megawatts of electricity to India and Bangladesh combined.
