KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have detained 50 people who gathered at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu today to protest without obtaining prior permission from the local administration.
According to Kathmandu District Police Office, members of “Gen Z United” who arrived at the site this morning were taken into custody for questioning.
Police said the action was taken because the protest was held without authorization and there were concerns about potential clashes with other GenbZ groups, which could pose safety risks to the demonstrators themselves.
Of those detained, 24 are women and 26 are men, police confirmed. Madan Karki, a leader of Gen Z United, said the group had sought permission from the Kathmandu District Administration Office to stage a peaceful demonstration but was denied approval.
He criticized the police move, calling it undemocratic.“We came with a positive spirit, believing Gen Z youths should unite. But we were stopped,” Karki said.
“We requested permission from the District Administration Office, but it was not granted,” he added.
