Police fire warning shots, army deployed, curfews extended amid nationwide protests
KATHMANDU: A protester injured during the Gen Z movement has died at Civil Hospital after being shot, according to Director Mohan Chandra Regmi of the hospital.
The youth was brought in for treatment following police gunfire but could not survive.
The deceased has not been identified by the authorities yet.
According to security forces, scores of people have been injured in the scuffle with security personnel.
The protests, organized against corruption, mismanagement, and the government’s social media ban, escalated dramatically today across several cities including Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Birgunj, Dang, Butwal, Hetauda, Narayangadh, and Surkhet.
In Kathmandu, demonstrators breached Gate No. 2 of the federal Parliament, smashed walls with stones, and set parts of the gate on fire.
SSP Bishwo Adhikari, Chief of Kathmandu District Police Range, said security forces fired warning shots in the air after protests continued despite a curfew.
“Efforts are being made to control the crowd using the principle of minimum force,” he added.
Earlier, police had deployed tear gas and aerial warning shots after protesters from Maitighar and Tinkune broke through barricades and converged at the Parliament complex.
Authorities subsequently imposed curfews in Maitighar, New Baneshwor, Tinkune, and Shankhamul until 10:00 PM.
Following the escalation, Gen Z Nepal organizers urged participants via Facebook to leave the area safely, stating: “Many self-interested groups are attempting to provoke the crowd. Our day has already been a success. Everyone should return home safely.”
