KATHMANDU: Gen Z protests reached a dramatic peak today after demonstrators stormed the Parliament complex in New Baneshwor, breaching security walls and gates to enter the restricted compound.

Protesters, who had marched from Maitighar Mandala and Tinkune, defied police barricades and forced their way inside the federal Parliament premises.

Eyewitnesses reported young demonstrators climbing over walls and gates to gain entry.

In response, security forces fired multiple rounds of tear gas and resorted to aerial warning shots in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

The clashes marked the most intense confrontation since the youth-led movement against corruption, mismanagement, and the government’s social media ban erupted earlier in the day.

The protest, which began peacefully with patriotic songs, flags, and placards demanding accountability, has now escalated into one of the most serious security challenges faced by the government in recent years.

Demonstrations are not limited to the capital—solidarity rallies have spread to Pokhara, Butwal, Dang, Nepalgunj, and other major cities, with large numbers of young people pouring onto the streets.

Security forces nationwide are on high alert, attempting to control the swelling wave of dissent.

Analysts warn that the breach of Parliament marks a watershed moment in Nepal’s political unrest, symbolizing the scale of public frustration and the determination of a new generation to confront entrenched power directly.
