KATHMANDU: A student-led climate initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste was launched at NIC Academy in Kathmandu on January 16, organizers said.
The Climate Smart School program, introduced by South Asian Youth for Sustainable Development (SAYS) with support from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), focuses on plastic waste segregation and climate awareness at the school level.
As part of the launch, KAS Director Andreas Klein handed over blue bins for plastic waste, weather-monitoring equipment, and student kits. The blue bins will allow separate collection of plastic, complementing existing systems for organic and hazardous waste.
SAYS said plastic pollution is a major contributor to climate change, noting that recycling one kilogram of plastic can prevent up to four kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions.
The program also includes student-led awareness activities through a Climate Smart Club and the use of weather-monitoring tools to track temperature, rainfall, and extreme weather events.
Organizers said the initiative aims to promote long-term behavioral change and strengthen climate resilience within school communities.
