KATHMANDU: Former minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, accused in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, has returned to prison after being released during the Gen Z movement.

According to Department of Prison Management Director Chomendra Neupane, Rayamajhi, who was freed from jail on September 9, appeared at the Central Jail today.

Earlier, the Kathmandu District Court had sent him to custody for trial over charges of creating fake Bhutanese refugees and sending Nepali citizens to the United States.

As per the Department of Prison Management, a total of 7,107 inmates — including 6,846 from prisons and 341 from correction centers — have returned so far.

In the past 24 hours alone, 123 inmates reappeared, while 779 have returned in the last three days. However, 7,306 inmates still remain at large.

During the Gen Z movement on September 8-9, 14,556 inmates escaped after prisons were broken into and set ablaze.

At that time, Nepal’s prison population stood at 30,640 across the country.
