Mother, daughter arrested in Kapilvastu for assault linked to witchcraft accusation

KAPILVASTU: Police in Kapilvastu have arrested a mother and daughter accused of assaulting a woman after labeling her a witch in Uptaha in ward 1 of Banganga Municipality of the district.

According to the District Police Office Kapilvastu, 51-year-old Hum Kumari Magar and her 21-year-old daughter, Khagisara Magar, allegedly attacked 57-year-old Lila Kumari Shrestha, accusing her of practicing witchcraft.

Authorities say the suspects struck the victim on several parts of her body with a burning wooden torch.

Police deployed a team to the scene after receiving information that the victim was being beaten and verbally abused. Both suspects were taken into custody.

A case has been registered against the pair under laws related to witchcraft accusation and abuse. The Kapilvastu District Court has granted police a seven-day remand to continue the investigation.
