Police arrest 122 escaped prisoners who fled during Gen Z protests

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have arrested 122 escaped prisoners who fled from various jails across the country during the Gen Z protests on September 9.

According to Kathmandu District Police Range, the arrests were made through coordinated operations by the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police, Valley Crime Investigation Office, and other subordinate units.

The detainees were captured from different locations in the Kathmandu Valley where they had been hiding following the jailbreak.

Among those arrested, 35 were serving sentences for theft, 17 for rape, 12 for attempted murder, 30 for drug-related crimes, 3 for homicide, 3 for polygamy, 3 for banking offenses, 3 for organized crime, 3 for robbery, 3 for vehicular manslaughter, 6 for other murder-related offenses, and 1 for human trafficking, while 3 others were wanted in miscellaneous cases.

Out of the 122 prisoners, 112 are men and 10 are women, said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramesh Thapa, chief of Kathmandu District Police.

He added that search operations are still underway to trace the remaining escapees who fled amid the chaos during the Gen Z movement demonstrations.

SSP Thapa urged the public to cooperate by reporting any suspicious individuals or escaped convicts hiding in their neighborhoods.

Police have also requested the public to immediately inform the nearest police station or call the Nepal Police hotline at 100 if they have information about unidentified newcomers or fugitives believed to be hiding in their area.
