KATHMANDU: The pre-trial detention hearing against CPN (Maoist Centre) Vice-Chair and former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara begins today.

On Monday, the Government Attorney’s Office filed a charge sheet against Mahara at Kathmandu District Court for gold smuggling through e-cigarettes (Vape).

The prosecution is seeking a fine of Rs 85.5 million and three years of imprisonment against him. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the police arrested Mahara on Sunday from Khumaltar, Lalitpur.

Mahara is accused of being involved in gold smuggling on 25 December 2022, when Chinese national Li Hasong hid gold in an electric cigarette (“Vape”) and brought it into the country.
