Singer Nitu Paudel dies; brother files complaint against Babul Giri

KATHMANDU: Singer Nitu Paudel, who attempted self-immolation by pouring petrol on herself, has died.

The 30-year-old passed away Friday morning during treatment at Kirtipur Burn Hospital.

Following her death, Paudel’s brother, Ganesh Paudel, filed a police complaint against singer Babul Giri for allegedly encouraging suicide.

The District Police Office, Kathmandu, has confirmed that the complaint is being processed.

“The complaint is under process, and after registration, the necessary legal procedures will follow,” said SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai of Kathmandu District Police Office.

Paudel set herself on fire on Saturday at Yam Tilak Studio in Anamnagar, suffering burns on 60% of her body.

After the self-immolation attempt, Giri was called in by the police but was released on the condition that he remain present for questioning.

Police claim that Giri tried to extinguish the fire when Paudel set herself ablaze.  He sustained minor injuries to his hands and feet but has already returned home after treatment.

The exact nature of the dispute between Giri and Paudel that led to the incident has not yet been clarified. Giri, 33, from Melamchi Municipality-6, Sindhupalchok, runs a studio in Anamnagar.

Paudel, 30, was a resident of Nagarkot, Bhaktapur.
