NEW YORK: Kulman Ghising, former Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, and Gyanendra Shahi, spokesperson and Member of Parliament from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, were honored with the ‘Global Hero Award’ at a grand ceremony in New York on Sunday evening.

The award was conferred by the organization Hami Nepali Global in recognition of their contributions. While accepting the award, Kulman Ghising recalled the time when Nepal faced up to 18 hours of daily load-shedding and credited collective efforts for making the country load-shedding free. “We brought electricity even to the remotest areas.

Today, every village has access to light. The authority was incurring huge losses, but we turned it around into profit,” he said. Ghising emphasized the need to continue resolving challenges and mentioned that he has launched the Ujyalo Nepal (Bright Nepal) campaign as a responsible citizen.

“I have initiated this campaign to ensure good governance, social justice, poverty reduction, employment generation, and to transform despair into hope. I request support from all of you,” he added, saying the award would be a great source of motivation in the days to come.

MP Gyanendra Shahi highlighted Nepal’s paradox: a country blessed with natural beauty and unity in diversity, yet known today as one of the poorest nations globally. “We must transform your skills and capacity into national strength. Let us return to Nepal; we will create an environment to come back,” he said.

He praised Ghising not only as a capable manager but also as a national hero, and stressed that such heroes are needed across every sector in Nepal.

Shahi also spoke against the abolition of citizenship by descent and urged people to dedicate themselves to national development with sincerity. “I never thought I would join politics. But if a pond is dirty, you can’t just stand on the edge and watch—you must jump in to clean it,” he said.

Renowned singer Ani Chhoying Dolma, who was also honored at the event, appreciated the organization’s efforts to encourage and recognize Nepalis contributing to the nation from home and abroad. She urged everyone to work together for Nepal’s progress.

The award was presented by Hami Nepali Global president Amrit Lama and vice president Sunita Khatri. The event also featured musical performances and honored various Nepali individuals from the diaspora for their contributions in sports, music, business, and other fields.

The organization stated that ‘Hami Nepali Global’ was established with the mission of uniting Nepalis around the world, rising above politics, religion, caste, or class.
