KATHMANDU: The United Nations (UN) is reducing peacekeeping troops by up to 25% in conflict-affected countries due to budget constraints.
Nepal, a major contributor of peacekeepers, will see a reduction in deployed personnel but will remain among the top countries providing troops.
Currently, over 120,000 peacekeepers from more than 120 countries serve in 14 UN missions worldwide.
Nepal has 5,819 personnel deployed across 10 missions, including 538 military troops.
Nepali peacekeepers are recognized globally for their discipline, courage, and professionalism.
Historically, 159,664 Nepali troops have contributed to UN missions, earning an equal number of UN medals.
During these missions, 74 Nepali soldiers were killed and 75 seriously injured. The troop reduction is proportional and part of UN’s budgetary adjustments.
Despite cuts, Nepal remains committed to supporting international peace efforts and can deploy up to 10,000 troops if requested.
Nepali peacekeepers also help strengthen diplomatic relations and generate foreign revenue through UN contributions.
