“The King of Kings” animation becomes Korea’s most successful production

KATHMANDU: ‘The King of Kings’, that shows the Jesus Christ life, was a huge success since its worldwide premiere on April 10 and became the highest-grossing Korean film in history.

During the last days of April, the Yonhap News Agency explained that the film broken the records of the Korean ‘Parasite’ (2019) with US$54.51 million in ticket sales at the U.S. box office in its first weekend of release. In turn, this information was collected by the production company Mofac Studios.

The motion picture was directed, written, and produced by Jang Seong-Ho, who explained in a video dedicated to Latino fans and published by Angel Studios that it took him 10 years to complete this work:

“During the creation of this film, I spent a lot of time thinking about what it should say about Jesus. In the end, from the first line to the last line of the Bible, if I had to summarize it in a single word, I think that word would be ‘love’, that is, how much God loves us”.

In the 1 hour and 45-minute feature, the writer Charles Dickens telling his son Walter the story of Jesus, and the boy is so moved that the narrative becomes a memorable journey as he learns about hope and the value of the love.
Upon its release, the animation about Jesus surpassed other productions of the same category and theme, such as ‘The Prince of Egypt,’ according to distribution company Angel Studios, which described the film’s premiere as “the widest opening for an animated biblical film in history”.

The film has toured theaters around the world and has been well received in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Portugal, Mexico, Singapore, Indonesia, and even reached South Africa and Nigeria.

At the moment, the Korean production has grossed over US$66 million worldwide. And that’s not the final figure, as there are still regions where it will be released, such as Spain and France, so the box office could exceed US$70 million.
