KATHMANDU: The Chinese government is set to upgrade the Civil Service Hospital.

A Chinese delegation stayed at the hospital for two weeks to conduct a feasibility study and plans to elevate it into a “state-of-the-art building.”

Executive Director of the hospital, Dr. Mohan Chandra Regmi, stated that China will add 200 more beds for the “third phase” of the hospital’s expansion, developing it as a state-of-the-art facility.

Previously, China had constructed 132 beds in the “first phase” and 300 beds in the “second phase” of the hospital.
According to Dr. Regmi, a Chinese team overseeing construction projects in Nepal recently returned after conducting the feasibility study.

“An agreement between the governments of Nepal and China to upgrade the Civil Service Hospital is already in place. The Chinese team came to conduct a feasibility study and has recommended expansion in its report,” he said. “The Chinese government is initiating the upgrade to provide specialized services and expand educational programs at the hospital.”

He added that construction will begin once the report is submitted in China. “The hospital is located in an open area and provides good treatment services, which is why China is upgrading it. According to the agreement, construction will start within a year, and it will become a state-of-the-art facility,” he said.

The new 200-bed advanced building will be constructed by demolishing the current hospital administration building. After the expansion, the hospital will have 500 beds. The government aims to develop it as a hospital providing specialized services. China has been involved in the hospital’s construction from the beginning.

Dr. Regmi also revealed that the new facility will include advanced equipment such as MRI and CT scanners along with high-tech installations.

Currently, the hospital can provide outpatient services to 400 patients, although around 1,000 patients visit daily. The hospital specializes in heart and cancer treatment through expert specialists.

A “cath lab” for cardiac treatment is being prepared, with operations expected to begin from the upcoming Baisakh. “The cath lab will treat patients with pressure-related heart problems or valve issues. Patients who cannot be treated via the cath lab will undergo surgery,” he explained.

Similarly, the hospital plans to start “brachytherapy” services for cancer treatment. “This technology treats cancer by placing radiation devices inside the body and is highly effective,” he said.

Dr. Regmi stated that the hospital will achieve full digitalization this year, with implementation planned for the following year.

“Patients will no longer need to carry lab reports physically. Reports will be sent to patients’ mobile phones, and doctors can access them on their computers,” he said.

The hospital has also started developing itself as a national referral center for women’s health issues, including uterine prolapse and urinary incontinence.

“We plan to provide free treatment using trained personnel and advanced technology,” he added.

It is the only government hospital in Nepal conducting genetic studies on infectious diseases.

The hospital is also preparing to establish a medical institution. Currently, it conducts medical classes under the affiliation of the National Academy of Medical Sciences.

About 1,000 patients visit the hospital daily for treatment.
