BIRGUNJ: Cholera patients have been detected in Murlitol of Ward 12, Birgunj Metropolitan City, Parsa.

Health teams from Birgunj Metropolitan City and the District Health Office were mobilized from Friday night after the cases were reported.

According to Mayor Rajeshman Singh, more than 30 people from Murlitol were admitted to Terai Hospital, Birgunj, with severe diarrhea at the same time.

Following the unusual surge in patients, the hospital alerted the metropolitan authority. Coordination between Narayani Hospital and the Parsa Health Office confirmed the presence of cholera bacteria in three patients.

Among the infected are a 16-year-old boy, a 24-year-old man, and a 24-year-old woman. The boy’s condition is reported to be critical.

Samples of drinking water from households in Murlitol have been sent to the National Public Health Laboratory in Teku, Kathmandu, for further testing.

Since Friday night, health workers have been conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns to prevent further spread.

Public Health Officer Jaymod Thakur stated that this is the first cholera outbreak in Birgunj in the last 10 years. Mayor Singh urged residents not to neglect preventive measures, warning that cholera is a serious contagious disease.

Narayani Hospital spokesperson Dr. Uday Narayan Singh confirmed that several patients with severe diarrhea are also being treated at the hospital’s emergency ward.
