KATHMANDU: Containing the cholera outbreak in Birgunj, Parsa, has become a mounting challenge. Of the 254 people showing symptoms, 71 have tested positive for the infection, according to the Birgunj Metropolitan City Health Division.

Test results of additional samples are still pending, while 124 patients have already been discharged. Hospitals in Birgunj are facing a steady rise in patient inflows.

Narayani Hospital, Terai Hospital, National Medical College, and Birgunj Health Care, among others, are reporting admissions far above normal levels.

In response, Narayani Hospital has instructed its doctors and staff to cancel all leave, while those already on leave have been ordered to report back immediately.

Efforts to contain the spread are being coordinated from the local to the central government level. To raise awareness, a 130-member team comprising health workers has been mobilized across neighborhoods and villages. They are conducting sanitation campaigns, inspecting food items, and monitoring hygiene practices.

As an additional preventive step, Birgunj Metropolitan City has declared public holidays for schools and colleges within its jurisdiction on Monday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a team of health workers deployed by the Ministry of Health has already begun its work. After carrying out inspections in hospitals on Sunday, the team is set to begin field visits in local communities from today.

Water samples collected from cholera-affected areas have been sent to Kathmandu for testing, but results have not yet been received.
