BIRGUNJ: The number of confirmed cholera cases in Birgunj Metropolitan City has climbed to 93 as of Monday, showing no signs of slowing despite ongoing efforts by all three tiers of government to curb the outbreak.
Health authorities have expressed concern as the infection continues to spread across the city.
According to Jaymod Thakur, Public Health Officer at the Health Office Parsa, the total number of confirmed cases rose sharply from 71 on Sunday evening to 93 by Monday.
In addition to confirmed cases, hundreds of other patients are undergoing treatment for diarrhea and cholera-related complications in various health facilities.
Currently, 166 patients are receiving treatment in different hospitals in Birgunj, while 178 have already recovered and been discharged.
Narayani Hospital alone has confirmed 32 infections through RDT testing, with another 32 reported at Terai Hospital.
Similarly, 12 cases have been identified at National Medical College, while Bhawani Hospital, Birgunj Health Care, and Mangalam Pathology have each reported three cases.
Early Ortho Hospital has treated two cholera patients, while one case each has been confirmed at Narayani Central Hospital, Advance Medicare, Nepal Indo Hospital, Neelkantha Hospital, Nepal Mediciti, Vyodha Hospital, and Sarvottam Hospital.
Since the beginning of the outbreak, a total of 344 patients with diarrhea and cholera have sought medical treatment in hospitals across the metropolitan city.
Of these, 27 remain in intensive care units, six are admitted to the High Dependency Care Unit, and 122 patients are currently being treated in general wards.
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation, warning that the spread of infection remains a serious threat to public health in Birgunj.
