KATHMANDU: Renowned medical reform activist Dr. Govinda KC has announced he will begin a new hunger strike starting Sunday, August 31, in protest against the government’s recent decision to increase student quotas in private medical colleges.
Dr. KC, a long-time advocate for medical education reform through repeated hunger strikes and advocacy campaigns, said he has been left with no option after the government ignored his demands.
He urged the government to revoke its decision, insisting that public medical institutions should see an expansion in seats instead, ensuring affordable education and wider access for students from all backgrounds.
Critics argue that the government’s recent policy disproportionately benefits private medical colleges, undermining public health and education priorities.
Observers warn that the move could deepen inequalities in medical education and limit opportunities for students who cannot afford private tuition.
Dr. KC’s hunger strikes in the past have repeatedly forced reforms in Nepal’s medical sector, making his upcoming protest a focal point for students, educators, and civil society concerned about equitable access to medical education.
