KATHMANDU: Kathmandu is witnessing a rare outbreak of scrub typhus, with dozens of cases detected daily at Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital (STIDH).

Patients, including recent admissions with fever, headache, nausea, and shortness of breath, tested positive for the disease, caused by bacteria transmitted through chigger mite bites. The outbreak, unusual for an urban area, is linked to widespread rodent presence in households.

Authorities also report increasing co-infections with dengue, though severe cases remain rare. Health experts warn residents to remain vigilant, monitor symptoms, and seek prompt medical attention, as antibiotics are effective if administered early.
