KATHMANDU: To ensure uninterrupted education, the ward office of Solududhkunda Municipality-2 in Solukhumbu district has been conducting regular health check-ups for nearly 450 students across all community schools in the ward, much to the delight of parents.
By addressing health and dental issues faced by students, the initiative has allowed children to continue their studies without disruptions. “Previously, when we had to take our children to the hospital for treatment, they would miss school. This programme has made it much easier,” said Chhiring Sherpa, a parent from Junbesi Secondary School.
A team of healthcare professionals visits the schools every two months to conduct general health check-ups, while dental examinations take place every four months, according to Iwad Thitey Sherpa, the Ward Chairperson of Solududhkunda Municipality-2.
Chairperson Sherpa emphasized that ensuring students’ good health is vital for improved learning outcomes, which is why this initiative was introduced. He highlighted that both health and education are fundamental needs of the people. “This programme will not only improve students’ health but also support their continuous learning,” he added.
Govinda Bahadur Basnet, the headmaster of Himalayan Sherpa Buddhist Basic School, also praised the programme, noting that it has been a great help to both students and parents. “When children fall ill, they miss school to visit the hospital, which disrupts their studies. This initiative has been very beneficial,” he stated.
The programme provides free health and dental check-ups along with medication distribution. The ward claims this to be the first initiative in Nepal where students in community schools receive regular, free medical and dental examinations at school.
