ARGENTINA: Argentina’s President Javier Milei has led his party to a sweeping victory in Sunday’s midterm elections, cementing his control over Congress and bolstering his ambitious plan to overhaul the nation’s struggling economy through radical spending cuts and free-market reforms.
Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, captured nearly 41% of the vote, securing 13 of 24 Senate seats and 64 of the 127 lower-house seats that were up for grabs.
The results mark a dramatic political shift, significantly strengthening Milei’s hand in implementing his reformist agenda after two turbulent years in office.
Before the vote, Milei’s ally and former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that the recently announced $40 billion U.S. aid package for Argentina would hinge on Milei maintaining political momentum.
While supporters welcomed Trump’s backing, critics condemned the remark as an act of foreign interference in Argentina’s domestic affairs.
Addressing jubilant supporters in Buenos Aires, Milei declared, “We must consolidate the path of reform we have embarked upon to turn Argentina’s history around once and for all — to make Argentina great again,” echoing Trump’s signature slogan.
Prior to this election, La Libertad Avanza held only seven Senate seats and 37 in the lower house, limiting Milei’s ability to push through his economic reform bills. Many of his key vetoes — including those blocking increased funding for universities, healthcare for children, and support for people with disabilities — were overturned by opposition lawmakers.
The election results mark a turning point. Celebrations erupted outside a Buenos Aires hotel where Milei watched the vote count.
Supporters hailed the win as a new beginning. “Milei didn’t have 15% of Congress before.
Now, with many more deputies and senators, he can change the country in a year,” said Dionisio, a young voter.
Another supporter, Ezequiel, added, “Our province was devastated by previous governments. Now, thank God, freedom has won. We want our daughter to grow up in a prosperous Argentina.”
With his party’s strengthened mandate, President Milei is now poised to push forward his sweeping austerity measures and market reforms, which he says are crucial to reversing Argentina’s long-standing economic decline.
