HONG KONG: Beijing is hosting its annual security forum, the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, which is expected to advance its strategic and military goals.

The event serves as a platform for Chinese officials to promote a new international order and counter what they call “hegemonism and power politics” – a clear jab at the United States.

Around 1,800 representatives from 100 countries are attending the three-day forum.

For many international delegates, the event offers a chance to gain insight into the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) rapid military modernization, including new weapons like hypersonic missiles.

The forum is taking place as the PLA navy conducts trials of its advanced aircraft carrier in the disputed South China Sea, adding to regional tensions.

In a sign of ongoing friction, most Western militaries are sending lower-level delegations. In contrast, senior officials from countries including Russia, France, Brazil, Singapore, and Vietnam are confirmed to be attending.
