BAGHDAD: A devastating fire at a five-storey hypermarket in al-Kut city, eastern Iraq, has killed at least 60 people, with 11 others reported missing, according to city health authorities and police sources.
Videos circulating on social media show the building engulfed in flames overnight as firefighters battled the blaze.
“We have confirmed the identities of 59 victims, while one body was burned beyond recognition,” a city health official said.
Additional bodies are believed to be trapped under the debris, according to city official Ali al-Mayahi.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. However, the governor told state news agency INA that preliminary findings from the investigation will be released within 48 hours.
Legal action has been initiated against both the building owner and the mall, the governor added.
