DOHA: The death toll from a strike on a girls’ school in the southern Iranian city of Minab has risen to 153, with 95 others injured, according to a spokesperson for Iran’s Education Ministry, as reported by state media.
Ali Farhadi told the state-affiliated IRNA news agency that rescue teams had transferred the injured students to nearby hospitals. He also claimed that the school was bombed three times during US-Israeli military operations, though CNN has not been able to independently verify this assertion.
Video footage geolocated by CNN places the scene at the Shajaba Tayyiba School, approximately 200 feet (61 meters) from a nearby Iranian military base. Satellite imagery indicates the school and the base have been separate sites since at least 2016.
CENTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins said, “We are aware of reports concerning civilian harm resulting from ongoing military operations. We take these reports seriously and are looking into them. The protection of civilians is of utmost importance, and we will continue to take all precautions available to minimize the risk of unintended harm.”
The Israeli military also said it is investigating the reports. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, international spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces, told reporters, “At this point, I am not aware of any Israeli or American strike on that location. I know both we and the Americans are checking.”
The incident highlights growing concern over civilian casualties amid heightened US-Israeli operations in the region.
