KHARTOUM: A massive landslide in Sudan’s western Darfur region has killed at least 1,000 people after flattening a mountain village, a rebel group controlling the area said Monday.

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army said the disaster struck Tarasin village in the Marra mountains on Sunday following days of heavy rainfall. Only one person is reported to have survived.

The group appealed to the United Nations and international humanitarian organizations for urgent assistance in recovering bodies trapped under the rubble.

Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, called the incident a “humanitarian tragedy that goes beyond the borders of the region” and urged global aid groups to intervene immediately, AFP reported.

Sudan has been mired in a civil war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis across the country.
