WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a fresh 10% tariff increase on Canadian imports after Ontario aired an anti-tariff advertisement in the U.S. featuring former President Ronald Reagan.

In a post on social media Saturday, Trump branded the advertisement a “fraud” and accused Canadian officials of a “hostile act” for failing to remove it ahead of the World Series baseball championship.

“Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now,” Trump wrote.

The move comes days after Trump withdrew from ongoing trade negotiations with Canada on Thursday.

Following the announcement, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Friday that his province would suspend the advertisement campaign in coordination with Prime Minister Mark Carney “so that trade talks can resume.”

However, Ford clarified that the ads would still air over the weekend, including during the World Series games featuring the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Canada remains the only G7 nation without a finalized trade deal with Washington since Trump began imposing steep tariffs on goods from major U.S. trading partners.

The U.S. currently levies a 35% tariff on all Canadian goods, though most items are exempt under an existing free trade agreement. Additional sector-specific tariffs include 50% on metals and 25% on automobiles.

Trump’s latest declaration, issued while en route to Asia, appears to add 10 percentage points to the existing tariffs — a move that could further strain the cross-border trade relationship.

Nearly 75% of Canadian exports are sold to the United States, and Ontario is home to much of the country’s automobile manufacturing, meaning the impact of Trump’s tariff hike could be deeply felt across Canada’s industrial heartland.
