WASHINGTON DC: U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the recently renamed Department of War to “prepare for possible action” against Nigeria, warning of swift retaliation if the Nigerian government fails to stop the alleged killing of Christians.
In a social media post on Saturday, Trump declared that the United States would immediately cut off all assistance to Nigeria if its government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
He further hinted at potential military intervention, saying the U.S. “may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
Trump did not specify which groups or incidents he was referring to, but claimed any U.S. response would be “fast, vicious, and sweet,” comparing it to attacks on what he called “our cherished Christians.”
“I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action,” Trump wrote, adding, “WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!”
The Nigerian government has not yet responded to Trump’s remarks. The post followed Trump’s announcement on Friday that Nigeria would be placed on the U.S. State Department’s list of ‘Countries of Particular Concern’, a designation used to monitor and address religious persecution worldwide.
