MANILA: Typhoon Kalmaegi has killed at least 66 people and displaced over 400,000 across the central Philippines.

The storm, known locally as Tino, made landfall early Tuesday with winds up to 130 km/h (80 mph).

Most fatalities, including 49 in Cebu, where 26 people remain missing, were due to drowning in “unprecedented” floods that swamped the island.

Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro declared a state of calamity.

The death toll includes all six crew members of a Philippine Air Force (PAF) helicopter that crashed in Agusan del Sur on Mindanao Island while on a relief mission Tuesday.

The PAF confirmed the recovery of all six bodies.

The disaster follows a September 30 earthquake that struck the region. Forecasters expect Kalmaegi to exit into the South China Sea by Wednesday.
