BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to further extend the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation during high-level talks in Beijing, according to Chinese state media Xinhua.

The meeting took place on Wednesday at the Great Hall of the People, where Xi welcomed Putin and both leaders held discussions on bilateral cooperation and global developments.

Xi noted that China and Russia signed the treaty 25 years ago, establishing a legal and institutional foundation for long-term good-neighborliness, friendship, and comprehensive strategic coordination. He said the bilateral relationship has since achieved “leapfrog development”.

He added that the international landscape is undergoing “momentous changes” and warned that the world risks returning to the “law of the jungle”. Against this backdrop, Xi said the treaty has proven to be “advanced, scientific and relevant”.

China, Xi said, supports the further extension of the treaty and will work with Russia to uphold its spirit and advance “back-to-back strategic coordination”.

The talks also reflected broader cooperation between the two sides, with both leaders discussing strengthening political trust, economic ties, and strategic coordination amid shifting global dynamics.
