Nepal Bar Objects Govt Decision to Withdraw Case of RSP President Lamichhane

The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) has said that the government’s decision to withdraw a case relating to organised crime and money laundering against Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane is inappropriate. Issuing a press statement today, NBA General Secretary Kedar Prasad Koirala said the Association strongly objected to the decision, stating that it promotes impunity through the politicisation of offences and the criminalisation of politics, thereby undermining the spirit of criminal justice. The NBA has demanded a guarantee of the rule of law and called on the government to immediately revoke its decision. Through the statement, the NBA said it has consistently advocated for an impartial, fair and transparent criminal justice system. The decision to withdraw the case contradicts existing legal provisions and sets a negative precedent regarding case retraction, he added. Such selective decisions, the statement argued, undermine the jurisdiction of courts and badly dent the concept of an independent judiciary.

The law provoked fraught debates in Australia about technology use, privacy, child safety and mental health and has prompted other countries to consider similar measures.

Trump Announces Formation of Gaza Peace Council

US President Donald Trump has announced the formation of a Gaza Peace Council, a body outlined in a US-backed plan aimed at ending the war in the territory. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said it was a great honor to announce that the council had been formed, adding that the list of its members would be revealed soon. He described it as the greatest and most distinguished council ever formed at any time or place. Trump said that, in his capacity as head of the Peace Council, he supports the newly appointed Palestinian technocratic committee and the national committee tasked with administering Gaza during a transitional period. He added that these Palestinian leaders were firmly committed to a peaceful future. The announcement comes shortly after the formation of a 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee to manage Gaza in the post-war period. The US-backed Gaza peace plan came into effect on October 10 and includes provisions for the deployment of an international stabilization force in the territory, as well as the training of Palestinian police units.

US Warns Iran that ‘all options are on the table’ in Emergency UN Meeting

After weeks of escalating tension, U.S. and Iranian officials faced each other Thursday at the U.N. Security Council, where America’s envoy renewed threats against the Islamic Republic despite President Donald Trump’s efforts to lower the temperature between the two adversaries. The U.S. was joined by Iranian dissidents in rebuking the government’s bloody crackdown on nationwide protests that activists say have killed at least 2,677 people. “Colleagues, let me be clear: President Trump is a man of action, not endless talk like we see at the United Nations,” Mike Waltz, U.S. ambassador to the U.N., told the council. “He has made it clear that all options are on the table to stop the slaughter. And no one should know that better than the leadership of the Iranian regime.” Waltz’s remarks came as the prospect of U.S. retaliation for the protesters’ deaths still hung over the region, though Trump signaled a possible de-escalation, saying the killing appeared to be ending. By Thursday, the protests challenging Iran’s theocracy appeared increasingly smothered, but the state-ordered internet and communication blackout remained.
