Gen-Z protests: 19 Dead, Over 300 Injured So Far

A total of 19 people have been reported killed so far across the country during the Gen-Z protests held today. A total of 347 people have been injured so far, according to the Ministry of Health and Population. Among the deceased, three died while undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital, where 100 injured are undergoing treatment. Similarly, six people are under treatment at Bir Hospital and 59 at the National Trauma Center, where eight have died during treatment. Similarly, 102 injured people are undergoing treatment at the Everest Hospital in Baneshwor, where three succumbed to their injuries. Eight people have been referred to other hospitals. the youth-led movement.

Gen Z Protests Erupt Across Nepal

Gen Z activists and student groups staged protests in several major cities across Nepal, including Biratnagar, Birgunj, Dang, Butwal, Itahari, Hetauda, Narayangadh, and Surkhet, on Tuesday. Demonstrations turned violent in Pokhara, Narayangadh, Itahari and other places. Youths protesting against the government and its social media ban set fire to the office of Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City on Monday afternoon. Protesters entered the municipal premises during the demonstrations, prompting police to fire warning shots in the air to disperse them. Shortly after, demonstrators torched the mayor’s office, the revenue section, and the store department of the sub-metropolis.

Gen Z Movement Says Protest Hijacked, Reaffirms Peaceful Intent

The Gen Z Movement Nepal issued a statement saying that their protest was hijacked during Monday’s demonstrations. “Today, our movement took a deeply regrettable turn. Our peaceful voice for justice, accountability, and good governance was affected by acts of vandalism and an attempt to forcibly enter the Parliament building. We want to make it clear that this was never our core objective,” the statement read. The movement emphasized its commitment to peaceful action.

Maoist Centre Demands PM Oli’s Resignation

The main opposition party, CPN (Maoist Centre), has demanded the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, accusing his government of committing a massacre during the ongoing Gen-Z protests. An informal meeting of top Maoist leaders, held in Gorkha under the party’s “Janta Sanga Maobadi: Madhyapahadi Pushpalal Lokmarg – Janajagaran Abhiyan,” concluded that Prime Minister Oli must step down immediately. The Maoist Centre leaders said the government’s handling of the Gen-Z demonstrations was “highly inappropriate” and held the prime minister directly responsible for the worsening situation.

Supreme Court Bar Association Condemns Crackdown

The Supreme Court Bar Association has condemned the use of force during the Gen Z protests. Secretary Raman Kumar Karna, in a statement, said the incident exposed the authoritarian nature of state administration. The statement read: “The Bar is deeply concerned about the display of excessive power by police and administration during the Gen-Z protests, which resulted in injuries to demonstrators and the deaths of sovereign citizens.”

Health Ministry Orders Free Treatment for Injured Protesters

The Ministry of Health and Population has instructed all federal hospitals to provide free treatment to those injured during the Gen-Z protests. Minister Pradeep Paudel directed that all patients brought to federal hospitals should receive care without any fees. The ministry also urged improved ambulance services, ensuring timely access to emergency care and facilitating transfers of patients between hospitals within the Kathmandu Valley.

Curfew Imposed in Pokhara After ‘Gen Z’ Protest

District Administration Office, Kaski has imposed a curfew in key areas of the city, citing security concerns after “Gen Z” protests became chaotic. The move follows a period of nationwide unrest, with the youth-led movement also spreading to other major cities. The curfew, issued by the District Administration Office, Kaski, took effect at 2 PM today and will remain in place until further notice. It covers the Sahidchok area and surrounding landmarks, including Y-chok, Milanchok, and the area near the Tourism Board office and Damside.

Maoist Centre Holds Emergency Meeting Amid Protests

In response to the Gen Z protests and the country’s current situation, senior officials of the CPN Maoist Centre held an emergency meeting in Bhimsen Thapa Rural Municipality–3, Gorkha, on Monday. The meeting decided to postpone the Maoist awareness campaign along the Mid-Hill (Pushpalal Highway) and to convene a full leadership meeting in Kathmandu the following day. The party expressed deep shock over the tragic incidents during the protests, offered condolences to youth killed by police gunfire, and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Unified Socialist Party Office Vandalized During Gen Z Protests

The central office of CPN (Unified Socialist) in Aloknagar, Kathmandu, was vandalized during the ongoing Gen-Z protests. Stones were hurled at the building, shattering window panes, while the main gate was also damaged. Protesters even attempted to set the office on fire. Following the vandalism, police have been deployed to secure the party headquarters.

Former Home Minister Khand’s Residence Vandalized in Rupandehi

Protesters from the Gen Z movement vandalized the residence of former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand in Tilottama, Rupandehi. “The house’s gate and window panes have been damaged,” said Rupandehi Police Chief, SP Pradeep Bahadur Kshetri. He added that police dispersed the group that had reached Khand’s house. Authorities have imposed a curfew in Rupandehi following the incident. The Gen-Z protests, which began on Sunday morning, have now spread nationwide. In Kathmandu, at least 13 people have already been killed in police firing during the demonstrations.

TU Invites Applications for 352 Assistant Professor Positions

Tribhuvan University has announced a large-scale recruitment for the position of assistant professor. The TU Service Commission’s office released a notice today stating that 352 assistant professor posts will be filled through an open competitive process. The notice specifies that the recruitment will follow an open and inclusive system. Eligible Nepali candidates can submit their applications online from September 14 to October 29. Candidates wishing to apply by paying double the standard fee can do so until November 5.

NEPSE Drops 35.99 Points; All Sectors Lose Amid Gen Z Protest

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) fell below 2,700 on Monday, dropping 35.99 points to close at 2,672.  Violent Gen Z protests and police action in Kathmandu impacted investor confidence. Trading volume rose to Rs 5.23 billion from Rs 4.40 billion the previous day. Among listed companies, 22 gained while 229 declined. All sectors posted losses, including Banking (-1.12%), Hydropower (-1.38%), and Trading (-3.31%).

Nepal Stock Exchange Directs Timely Financial Reporting

Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has instructed listed companies to submit financial statements and other important information according to specified formats and deadlines. A circular issued Sunday mandates companies to submit audited annual financial statements within five months of the fiscal year-end and quarterly reports, including earnings per share and price-to-earnings ratio, within 30 days of quarter-end.

Government to Raise RS 8.50 Billion Through 91-Day Treasury Bills

The government is set to collect RS 8.50 billion in deposits on Monday under the 91-day Treasury Bills scheme. For the current fiscal year, the government has set a target of raising RS 3.62 billion through internal borrowing. Of this, RS 1.30 billion is planned to be collected through Treasury Bills. With banks holding excess investable funds, the government has been increasing internal debt and issuing long-term Treasury Bills.

Commercial Banks Increase Investment in Monetary Instruments

As interest rates fall and costs increase, commercial banks have begun investing more in monetary instruments. Apart from Nepal Rastra Bank, the government’s issued monetary instruments are also seeing increased investment. According to the Public Debt Management Office, investors participated in bidding with eight times the required amount. The office issued two Treasury Bills on September 1: a 91-day and a 364-day Treasury Bill.

Foreign Investment in Nepal Concentrated in Three Countries

According to Nepal Rastra Bank’s 2024 survey, Nepal has received foreign investment from 60 countries. The survey indicates that just three countries account for more than 50% of the total foreign investment. According to the central bank, as of the survey period, Nepal had a total foreign investment of RS 332.97 billion. Of this, RS 168.61 billion was in paid-up capital, RS 122.02 billion in reserves, and RS 48.32 billion as loans.
