SUNSARI: Authorities have opened 38 gates of the Koshi Barrage after the water level in the Saptakoshi River continued to rise, posing a risk of flooding.

Due to continuous rainfall in the hilly regions, the water flow in the river has surged, leading officials to open 38 out of the barrage’s 56 gates.

According to the water level measurement at 10 p.m., the flow had reached 273,925 cusecs per second. At 4 p.m., the flow was measured at 256,010 cusecs, when 34 gates had been opened.

District Police Office spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yogaraj Khatri said the flow is rising at a rapid pace.

“The barrage is currently flashing a red light, which is activated when the flow exceeds 150,000 cusecs to indicate potential danger. The red light warns locals and concerned agencies to remain alert,” he said.

Although there is no immediate risk of inundation, continuous rainfall in the hills is steadily raising the water level.

Authorities have urged residents around the Saptakoshi area to take precautionary measures and avoid risky zones, DSP Khatri added.
