KATHANDU: Flights across Nepal have been disrupted due to adverse weather conditions. Continuous rainfall has reduced visibility, affecting operations at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and several other airports around the country, according to airport authorities.
Rinji Sherpa, spokesperson for TIA, confirmed that both domestic and international flights have been affected due to poor weather and low visibility.
In the morning, a Jazeera Airways international flight was diverted to Varanasi, India, due to en-route weather conditions.
Similarly, a mountain flight operated by Buddha Air had to be diverted. Three aircraft from Summit Air and Tara Air, scheduled to fly from Ramechhap to Lukla, were also diverted due to poor weather at Lukla airport.
However, as rainfall subsided, normal flight operations resumed at Kathmandu and regional airports outside the capital, spokesperson Sherpa added.
Some flights to remote areas remain suspended, and a Nepal Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Thamkharka was also diverted.
Kathmandu Valley experienced light rainfall since early morning, but weather in the surrounding areas has now largely cleared, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
The department’s latest weather bulletin noted that the current rainfall is due to the influence of western and local wind systems, causing light rain in Kathmandu and other hilly areas of the country.
Additionally, the moisture-laden air from the Bay of Bengal is contributing to rainfall activity. The department forecasts partly to mostly cloudy skies throughout the country this afternoon.
Thunderstorms, lightning, and winds accompanied by light to moderate rain are likely in parts of Koshi and Lumbini provinces, as well as some hilly and other regions. Light rain and snowfall are also expected in some parts of the Himalayan and hilly regions.
