KATHMANDU: Mayor of Kathmandu, Balen Shah, has voiced support for Gen Z’s recommendation to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as head of Nepal’s interim government, following unprecedented protests that shook the nation earlier this week.
On Monday and Tuesday, Gen Z activists staged mass demonstrations demanding transparency, an end to corruption, and a challenge to privilege and generational wealth. The protests turned deadly, leaving 30 people killed and culminating in the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, leaving the country without a sitting prime minister.
In this context of political vacuum, Gen Z formally forwarded Sushila Karki’s name to the Nepal Army for consideration as interim government leader tasked with conducting new elections. Mayor Balen Shah fully endorsed the proposal, praising the movement’s wisdom, unity, and judgment.
In a Facebook post, Mayor Shah urged citizens not to panic, emphasizing that the interim government’s primary role is to organize elections and provide a fresh mandate. He also cautioned those eager to assume leadership prematurely, stating that energy, honesty, and vision are needed for long-term national progress, not temporary positions.
Mayor Shah further appealed to the President to immediately form the interim government and dissolve Parliament, framing it as a necessary step to safeguard the historic revolution led by Gen Z.
