KATHMANDU:  Former King Gyanendra Shah has said that this is a time to pray for Nepal and Nepalis, urging citizens to remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon season.

Speaking to the press on Monday at Nirmal Niwas, where he marked his 79th birthday, the former monarch expressed concern over flood, landslide, and disease risks that intensify during the rains.

“This is a time for prayer—for Nepal and for all Nepalis,” Shah said. “Being born in Nepal alone does not make us Nepali. Nepal must live within us—only then are we truly Nepali.”

He also appealed to people to be alert and safe from natural disasters and waterborne illnesses.

“It’s the season of heavy rain. There’s a risk of floods and landslides, and the spread of water-related diseases. I urge all brothers and sisters to remain vigilant and act with caution,” he added.

The statement came during a public event organized at his official residence in Nirmal Niwas, where the former king celebrated his 79th birthday. In a gesture reminiscent of Dashain’s tika rituals, the gates of Nirmal Niwas were opened to the public for birthday greetings.

A large number of people—from royalist leaders to ordinary citizens—flocked to the residence to extend their wishes. Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chief Whip Gyan Bahadur Shahi was among the early visitors to offer his greetings.

According to the former king’s secretariat, Nirmal Niwas was opened from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for well-wishers, supporters, and members of royalist parties.
