KATHMANDU: Former Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha has cautioned that Nepal’s recurring political movements have kept the nation trapped in a cycle of instability and prolonged transition.
Speaking at an event titled “Rashtrahit Sarbopari–2025” (Nation Above All–2025) organized by the Citizens’ Initiative for National Unity in Lalitpur, Shrestha said that Nepal has repeatedly gone through transitional phases, with major political upheavals erupting almost every decade.
He noted that although each movement has changed the political system, it has failed to bring meaningful improvement to the lives of ordinary citizens.
This, he argued, has only deepened frustration and hindered the country’s progress.
“Nepal has witnessed numerous movements — almost every decade, we find ourselves in some form of agitation. The system changes, but people’s situation does not. These recurring transitions have only fueled instability,” Shrestha remarked.
