KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has called the government’s decision to block social media platforms “wrong” and urged a reconsideration.
Thapa shared his views on social media Thursday, noting that the Supreme Court directed the government to create a legal framework, not to shut down social platforms.
“The government is going in the wrong direction; this must be reconsidered,” he wrote.
He emphasized that social media is an important tool for citizens to exercise freedom of expression, engage in public debate, and hold the government accountable. Shutting it down, he argued, goes against democratic values.
“Social media is intertwined with social relationships, entrepreneurship, the digital economy, and daily life. Restricting it curtails freedom of expression and the right to information,” Thapa added.
He urged the government to promptly draft necessary laws to prevent misuse and make social media safe for users.
